Worship Study #3

Foundation Scripture:

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing, and perfect will."

Romans 12:1-2

We learned in the last study that God is naturally merciful...meaning He, by default, is forgiving and that He does not give us what we deserve to get.

Micah 7:18 says...

"Who is a God like You,

who pardons sins, and forgives our transgression?

You do not stay angry forever

But delight to show mercy"

But, what does that have to do with worship? Read on, and you will see.

Mercy allows a Perfect God to accept praise, worship, and a close relationship with an imperfect man. It is by His mercy that we are even allowed into His throne room.

Let's take a look at "worship" for a moment:

Authentic worship is a response to an authentic encounter with the living God.

(weorthscipe or worth-ship) to ascribe, assign, attribute, declare worth.

So, in short, worship is declaring God's worth. But we have to know His worth before we can declare it.

So...

What is God worth to you?

To the extent that you can answer that, you will be a worshipper.

In our study, and most importantly, in our daily lives, we must remember that God is always the initiator.

Everything we do for God is a response to what He has done for us. We live because He gives us breath. We thrive because He blesses us. We repent because He has offered us forgiveness.

To know God's worth to us, we should first look at our worth to God.

Let us look at ourselves "in view of God's mercy" .....  (next week's study)
